New block paving driveways with proper groundwork

A block paving driveway can completely change the front of a property, but it only works as it should if the groundwork underneath is done properly. We start with the basics: digging out to the right depth, installing a suitable sub-base, compacting in layers and making sure the drive falls in the right direction so water goes where it should.

From there, we lay quality block paving in the pattern and colour you choose, with neat cuts around manholes, steps, walls and drains. Every driveway is finished with tidy edges and a clean-up so it is ready to use as soon as possible.

  • Driveways for family homes, rural properties and small businesses

Block paving colours, patterns and edging

Block paving driveways can be designed to suit modern homes, older properties and everything in between. You can keep things simple with a single block colour in a stretcher bond or herringbone pattern, or add contrast with borders, soldier courses and feature bands.

Typical options include:

  • Modern charcoal, grey and silver blocks for newer homes
  • Traditional red, brindle and brown tones for older properties
  • 45° and 90° herringbone patterns for added strength
  • Contrasting border lines around the driveway and paths

When we quote, we can run through sensible options for your property, including ways to keep the driveway easy to use, easy to sweep and practical in bad weather.

Sub-base, drainage and long-lasting block paving

The most important part of any block paving driveway is hidden under the surface. We dig out to the right depth and install compacted type 1 or similar sub-base material, laid and compacted in layers. Where required, we install drainage channels, soakaways and falls so surface water can run off safely.

On sloping driveways, shared access or busy parking areas, we allow for heavier use and take extra care on the base and edging to help reduce movement over time. The aim is a driveway that looks as good in a few years’ time as it does when it is first swept off.

Block paving driveways across Kent, East Sussex & Surrey

We install block paving driveways across a wide area, including Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, the Medway towns, Heathfield, Uckfield, Crowborough, Reigate and Redhill. If you are close to any of these places, we can usually visit quickly to take a proper look.

For larger driveways and parking areas, we also work in rural locations where access allows. If a job is outside our normal area or not something we can take on, we will say so upfront so your time is not wasted.

How much does a block paving driveway cost?

The cost of a block paving driveway depends on:

  • The size of the driveway or parking area
  • The amount of digging out and waste removal needed
  • The type and depth of sub-base required
  • The block style, brand and pattern you choose
  • Extras such as drainage channels, steps and raised borders

Once we know your postcode, rough measurements and see a few photos of the existing driveway, we can usually give a sensible guide price and then confirm everything after a site visit. For a general overview of how we approach pricing different driveway surfaces, you can also see our driveway cost guide 2025.

Resin overlay guide price (for comparison): starting from £40 per m². Guide prices are based on larger areas with a sound existing surface and are worked out on generous square metre measurements.

Block paving driveway FAQs

Are block paving driveways durable?

Yes, a well-built block paving driveway can last many years. The key is in the preparation: proper dig-out, a compacted sub-base, good drainage and correctly installed edge restraints. We focus on these basics so the blocks stay where they should.

Do you seal block paving driveways?

Some customers choose to seal block paving once it has fully settled and been brushed in. Sealing can help reduce staining and make the surface easier to keep clean, but it is not essential for every driveway. We are happy to discuss this when we quote.

Will weeds grow through block paving?

Weeds do not usually grow up through a properly installed sub-base, but they can sometimes seed in from above in the joints, just like on any other surface. Regular sweeping and the occasional treatment can help keep this under control.

Can you replace an old concrete or tarmac drive with block paving?

Yes. Many of our block paving driveways involve removing an old concrete or tarmac surface first, adjusting levels and then installing a new sub-base and block paving. Once we have seen your existing drive, we can explain the best approach.

How long will my driveway be out of use?

Most block paving driveways for typical homes take from a few days up to about a week, depending on size and weather. We explain likely timings when we quote so you know how long access will be affected.
