Typical driveway guide prices

Every driveway is different, but the figures below give a sensible starting point for common driveway surfaces when working on reasonably-sized areas in Kent, East Sussex and Surrey.

Driveway surface Typical guide price (from) Notes
Tar & chip overlay From £20 per m² Best on existing tarmac/concrete & sound bases. Ideal for long, rural or shared driveways.
Gravel driveway From £15 per m² Cost-effective on larger areas. Price depends on stone choice and edging required.
Resin overlay From £40 per m² Overlay onto suitable existing tarmac or concrete. Smooth, modern finish (based on larger areas with a sound existing surface).
Permeable concrete base From £60 per m² Used as a permeable sub-base for resin or as a finished surface in its own right.
Block paving driveway From £65 per m² Includes excavation, hardcore sub-base, sand bed and blocks laid with neat edges.
Tarmac driveway From £70 per m² New tarmac surface with proper sub-base, binder and wearing course.
Plain concrete driveway From £75 per m² Simple, strong concrete slab with suitable depth and reinforcing where needed.
Full resin system with permeable base From £120 per m² Permeable concrete or tarmac base plus resin bound finish, built as a full system.

All prices shown are guide figures only. They are based on larger areas with sensible access and are worked out on generous square metre measurements. Small, awkward or steep driveways, drainage work, steps, walls or raised beds will affect the final cost.

What affects the price of a driveway?

The most important part of any driveway is the groundwork. Before we talk about surfaces, we look at what is already there and what is needed underneath to stop sinking, cracking or puddles later on.

Main things that change the price

  • Size of the area: larger drives cost more overall, but the price per m² is usually lower.
  • Existing surface: good tarmac or concrete can sometimes be overlaid, which saves money. Old broken surfaces, bare soil or mixed materials normally need more preparation.
  • Access for machinery: tight access, steps, narrow side paths or rear drives can add time.
  • Drainage and levels: shaping the area so water runs away from buildings is essential.
  • Edging and extras: kerbs, block paving borders, steps and paths all add to the price.

If you send your postcode, a rough idea of the size and a few photos of the existing driveway, we can usually give a realistic guide price before any visit.

Which driveway surface suits your budget?

There is no single “best” driveway surface. The right choice depends on how you use the space and how much you want to spend.

  • Budget-friendly: gravel or tar & chip overlays on suitable bases.
  • Mid-range: standard tarmac or block paving driveways.
  • Higher-end: full resin systems on permeable bases or more detailed block paving designs.

We are always open about costs and happy to price a couple of options side by side so you can see what fits your budget.
